Lanai Nightclub is Closing, Sad to Hear It
A seven year run is a pretty good haul for a downtown bar. Lanai was always a fun place to hang out on a rooftop and see the sights of the city. I’ve always commened them for their outreach, inclusiveness, and great attitude.
If out and about, stop by the closing party.

When Dining Out Requires Accommodations, Always Ask for a Manager
Kudos to Cantina Laredo in downtown Austin. I was with a party of 14 with original intentions to dine at Bar Chi Sushi, but delayed arrivals, miscommunications and a very crowded restaurant thwarted those plans. I popped into Cantina and asked the bar manager if they could take a late seating and accommodate a table of 14. Of course they close at 9:00 and it was already after 8:15, but they gladly seated us, then rushed drink orders, took our dinner orders and got everyone plated within minutes. Not only was the service first rate, the food was awesome. No one complained! Cantina is not always the first place that comes to mind for modern Mexican food because we have so many choices for such, but they truly outdid themselves.
Many thanks.

Here Comes The Beef…
Surprise!
Austin is getting yet another BBQ place. I do love meat, so I am not displeased about Cooper’s coming to town. I’ve been to the New Braunfels location and I love their food. I’m not a BBQ snob as I like variety in flavor, technique, etc… but I loathe fatty BBQ. I’ve been told a lot of taste and moisture comes from fat. When I’ve dined at Cooper’s they do a great job of trimming the fat so you’re paying for mostly meat – of which I am very thankful for.
Cooper’s is opening right next to the new JW Marriott, a wall apart from La Pena. Curiously, I find it peculiar that yet another Starbucks is going into the JW, when there is Caffe Medici across the street, Houndstooth a block away, another Starbucks in the W Hotel, and two more on congress (6th and 9th). Everyone is to be properly over-caffeinated downtown, no doubt.
I peeked into the building and it appears this location my have a bar-like atmosphere.
We shall see.

Royal Blues
1. I am glad we have small downtown markets like Royal Blue Grocery.
2. I wish they were more like Pret A Manger.
After two years of working downtown, the food rotations at Royal Blue are giving me the blues. Add to that the fact that REALLY healthy food items are few and far between. I don’t want more choices, I just want better things. Thoughts?
