A San Antonio Must; Mi Tierra Restaurant
I went down to San Antonio from Austin to see some works of art at a gallery in Terrell Hills/Alamo Heights and afterwards headed to one of my favorite spots downtown, Mi Tierra. You’d think the long lines and busy bar would mean a long wait time, but a couple of margaritas into it, no one cares. I’ve been going to this restaurant since I was a wee child, and every time I’m there, the nostalgia of my childhood comes back. I just love the place. The food is surprisingly good for the number of people they run through there.

Heresy! Torchy’s is Not the Best Taco Shack, IMHO.
Midtown, east of 35 on 51st is Paco’s Tacos. Simply amazing tacos. The flavors are unreal, trust me on this one; they use a very different tortilla that changes everything. Nom nom nom…

2015 Austin Opera Serenata Wine Dinner and Auction
The Austin Opera Serenata Wine Dinner and Auction, held on February 21 at Austin’s Four Seasons Hotel, was a fabulous event. The four course meal was enjoyable, the wine flowed generously, and there was song, dance and, most of all, auctions. The event is fundamentally a wine auction, but the steering committee did a fantastic job of creating a program filled with variety; live music and dancing were new treats. My kudos to all committee members as I know firsthand the amount of work and energy it takes to bring the event to fruition.
As an Austin Opera Guild member and supporter of Ausitn Opera, I was particularly pleased with the support of local businesses and sponsors, coupled with the strong participation and donation of items for both the silent and live auctions. It was a splendid event. Bravo! (Pics here)
Renowned artist, Graydon Parrish, coupled with the well-know Austin attorney, Becky Beaver, provided one of the many wondrous live auction items. (pictured below)

Quattro Got Me!
I knew Valentine’s Day was going to be a chaotic mess since it was on a Saturday, so I opted for a nice Italian lunch in Downtown Austin in lieu of dinner. I had my heart set on dining at the new Osteria Pronto at the JW Marriott but upon examining the menu, only brunch items were being served and nothing had the Italian flair I was looking for. The dinner menu wouldn’t kick in until 5:00 p.m. and I wasn’t willing to wait until then. So a quick walk down Congress Ave. had us arrive at Quattro Gatti. A “go to” favorite of many Austinites, I was quite happy to finally dine with them. First rattle out of the box, we are told no pizzas could be prepared as the oven wasn’t ready. {The restaurant had just opened its doors for lunch} Then comes the specialties for the day; they were out of the risotto dish. So on to the full menu; meals selected then ordered, as well as cocktails and beverages. Oops, not so fast! They’re out of the vegan selection. ….oh joy. We asked, “Well, what is available on the menu?”
Our food arrives and is certainly agreeable and delicious. The second round of cocktails made their way to us as well. All is coming along quite nicely, The ambiance is fun, there are people milling around on the street; all is really good. Then comes the bill. When we placed our orders, we were well aware of the price-point of our meals; steep for lunch, but not to the point of being prohibitive. Surprise! Your cocktails were $12 each. Yes, $12. I thought we had transported ourselves to Manhattan! Mind you, this was not call liquor, just simple vodka and soda. We shell out $70 for our “light lunch” then departed a bit disillusioned.
While the food was good, I’d hold out for other fare. I think Taverna is a better option and certainly in relation to price. We had an attentive server who apologized, almost comically, for the unavailable menu items.

One of my Happiest Evils, The 1886 Cafe and Bakery
Every once in a while I think it is important to give yourself a little “pick me up” or treat just to make things pleasant and interesting. My favorite place to do that in Downtown Austin is the 1886 Cafe and Bakery and the thing that does it for me is the $5 pain au chocolat, warmed in one of those mazing quick ovens. I know you can get a croissant at Randalls for a little over a buck, but trust me, this one is amazeballs. Stop in, sit down, enjoy the ambiance and treat yourself.

A Nice Lunch in Downtown Austin? Dine at Due Forni
I’ve always liked what Due Forni did with the space in the Littlefield Building at 601. E Congress. They offer a number of quick lunch menu items including a delicious lunch burger with a side dish and salad. You can expect to get out of there for about $20 with tip, but no libations. My burger was perfectly cooked, the pickled onions a surprise treat and the vinaigrette on the salad was tangy and delicious. A very nice compliment to the grilled Brussels Sprouts.
If I’m correct, they offer a great happy hour too with a number of $5 items.

Hight Times at The Hightower
I had completely forgotten that I recommended the Hightower as a destination for dinner. I took the recommendation of a coworker and voila, a group of friends and I found ourselves there after a few early libations at the Driskill Bar.
The appetizers were phenomenal. The brussels sprout were savory and included the strong suggestion of peanut butter. Simply delicious! We also selected the smoked redfish spread and the pimento cheese spread, both were really quite good. A couple of people complained of too much salt, but I thought all was fine. The menu took a bit of deciphering, but I approached it like a tapas menu and was able to figure out a pairing to enjoy as an entree. I had the ceviche, which was a little flavorless after the strong taste sensations of the appetizers. Everyone at the table dined on a variety of offerings and the chicken thighs as well as the hangar steak seemed to take all the kudos. I must mention that one piece of chicken was not cooked properly, but the staff was quick to correct the situation and graciously removed the item from the bill.
Our waiter was quick, efficient and attentive. He also made several suggestions that we took him up on, from wine to “the best brussels sprouts on the planet!”
My only complaint was the noise level. They needed fabric and under table and chair cushions to buffer/absorb sound. My ears are still ringing! So the place is really fun, really loud and really tasty. Try the caipirinha. Trust.
