Freddy’s Place, Trust Displaced?
Freddy’s is a South Austin icon that is known for its easy going atmosphere, SoFi vibe, quick food, live music and outside bar. A family place, certainly. Dogs welcome, I believe. So when my family was passing through, I suggest we grab a bite there for lunch. I got the short end of the stick as everyone raved about their meal. I had the lunch portion of Green Chile Pepper Mac & Cheese and a Bloody Mary. The mac and cheese was served lukewarm and the bloody mary so salty I could barely drink it. Sans 1000 mg of salt, it would have been fine. Everyone else had sandwiches or salads and all said their meals were great. Maybe it was a one-off day for me. I was just expecting my food to be hotter and cocktail more flavorful. The service was top notch, a guy named “Stoner,” I kid you not.

Good Food In a Sports Bar? As if! Well Actually, The Park Surprises
After a bunch of errands, I was starving. We popped into the neighborhood mega sports bar call The Park (South Lamar). I’ve had burgers there before but had not tried any of the entrees. I was very happy to see they offered smaller, discounted portions. I don’t always want to eat like a Texan. Monday’s Happy Hour offerings did not disappoint and for some reason, in 46 degree weather, I found it necessary to have a frozen mojito. It was pretty good, nonetheless. My main dish was called “The Hot Chick” and she was wicked hot. …as in spicy. I love hot food, so was completely satiated. The side of black beans with tomato and queso fresco was quite tasty. If I was an avid sports fan, I’d have likely thought I was in heaven, but I was more interested in the food. Lots of families and large parties, but I wasn’t overwhelmed by the crowd. Very affordable.
