  • El Taquito

Truly Tex-Mex on Riverside. Cheap, Fast, and Delicious.

I am from South Texas and I know great Mexican food. While there are a lot of Mexican food restaurants in Austin, I often long for the particular flavor and style of South Texas cooking that I grew up with. With the help of a friend who is in the know, I have found it! El Taquito on East Riverside (not far from I35). Mind you, the place is certainly low-brow, but the food is as genuine as it comes. Dirt cheap too. For the crowd that needs food after the bewitching hour, it is open late.  The queso fundido is a must (add meat).

New in Town? Need a Cowboy?

…or Karaoke, or 90’s Pop music?

Most people I’ve talked to who relocate to Austin from cities outside of the South, namely East Coast acquaintances, are disappointed that there is not a plethora of cowboys, hats, big hair and western boots in Austin. Sixth Street, East Sixth, Dirty Sixth, The Drag, West Sixth, SoLa, SoCo and The Warehouse Districts are far from Country and Western hot spots.  Austin is actually quite metropolitan and homogenized these days. So where do you go for an authentic Country night out? Step into Graham Central Station, all your curiosities will be satisfied. You might even develop some new ones.

I’m the first in line to say, “Let’s do something different!” and we definitely did. The continuation of birthday antics landed us on a cold, wet, and nasty night in far North Austin at this megaplex with three entertainment vignettes; a full-on Country music bar, a Karaoke bar, and a Top 40 music bar. Toss in one of the most wildly varied crowd of patrons and voila, you’ve got hours entertainment. We witnessed cultural “dance-offs,” a wide range of stylized country dancing, provocative and titillating dating/courtship displays, coupled with random sightings of all sorts of gyrating, off-key singing, and generous consumption. All in the name of a good time. …and that it was, actually.

While certainly outside of my normal scope, I have to hand it to the Graham Central for being inclusive, welcoming, inexpensive, and entertaining. I saw straight, gay, perhaps bi, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, young, old, short, tall, big and small. This was a complete melting pot and all the more fun for it. Certainly something to check out.

A very happy birthday to Cára Q.. We had a blast!

  • Casino El Camino

Casino El Camino. Killing Me With Deliciousness

Casino El Camino is always a commitment. No matter what you intend to eat, you’re going to have 2,000 calories staring you in the face. The guys hunkered down in the back serve up some incredible food from a teenie-weenie kitchen. It is amazing they can move around in there! Drinks at the bar are stout and the “mini-meal” Bloody Mary’s are the bomb.  Worth every penny!

The bar is a complete dive, but that is what makes the space so cool. Trippy music, weird tv marathons add to the allure of the space. Try it out.

  • Pleasant Storage Room Closes, Peche Slides In

I was on 4th Street on Sunday and I noticed Pleasant Storage Room had closed. I liked the place but often felt like after dropping fifty bucks, I had been had.

I did a little Google investigating, and voila…  Peche has a takeover planned.

Rum drinks in Peche’s Old Kill Devil? Well, we shall see what that is all about.  I’ve always worried the building is cursed as nothing seems to work, but someone with vision, capital, and a great name cold pull off something that lasts.  Hoping for the best as I think the space it amazing.

  • Freddie's photo

    Freddy’s Place, Trust Displaced?

Freddy’s is a South Austin icon that is known for its easy going atmosphere, SoFi vibe, quick food, live music and outside bar. A family place, certainly. Dogs welcome, I believe. So when my family was passing through, I suggest we grab a bite there for lunch.  I got the short end of the stick as everyone raved about their meal. I had the lunch portion of Green Chile Pepper Mac & Cheese and a Bloody Mary. The mac and cheese was served lukewarm and the bloody mary so salty I could barely drink it. Sans 1000 mg of salt, it would have been fine.  Everyone else had sandwiches or salads and all said their meals were great. Maybe it was a one-off day for me. I was just expecting my food to be hotter and cocktail more flavorful. The service was top notch, a guy named “Stoner,” I kid you not.

  • Low Brow, High Times: The 04 Lounge

Wanting a some spirits but not wanting to drive, I joined a few friends on a short walk to the 04 Lounge on South Congress. It was everything from halter tops to tuxedos and everyone was having a really good time. I always appreciate a bar that is staffed appropriately to service the patrons.  Service was great, music was esoteric (digital jukebox), and no attitude.
